Pre-season focus - Develop training habits

If you read my last post on routine - if not, go and read it now - you might have decided to have your early season strength and conditioning sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoon. You may encounter a few hiccups at first; forgotten gym bag, stuck in traffic, a vet appointment you made six months ago. Eventually things smoothout and you put in a solid couple of weeks, but then more problems crop up. Things keep getting in the way. Maybe you get home and realize it’s Wednesday and you are supposed to be at the gym.

This happens to everyone. Recall what I said, about angels handing you a perfect schedule? The same thing goes for habits. Sticking to a plan does not just happen automatically. No matter how good your intentions are, you will begin to stray off course. Unless, that is, you make an effort to make training a habit.

If you really want to dig into this topic, the best deep dive I have found is a book called Atomic Habits, by James Clear. https://jamesclear.com/atomic-habits. There is one tip I can offer you here. Every night, just before bedtime, review the next day’s training and gather your gear. Have it out where you will see it when you get up in the morning. There is a lot that goes into developing effect habits, and the Atomic Habits offers many clearly written examples.
